Greenacres, Florida: A City with Rich History and Vibrant Community
A Journey Through Time
From Vision to Reality
Greenacres was founded in 1923 by Lawrence Carter Swain, who moved his family from Massachusetts to create a community for the middle class. Swain accumulated approximately 1,000 acres of property, dividing it into sections or “plats.” Plat II, located west of Military Trail, became the “Original Section” of the city and still exists today.
Incorporation and Early Challenges
On May 24, 1926, the community was officially incorporated as “Greenacres City.” The name was chosen from a list of potential names, along with the city’s slogan, “A Good Place to Live.” However, the young city faced immediate challenges. In September 1926, a devastating hurricane known as ‘The Big Blow’ hit Greenacres, followed by another destructive storm in 1928.
Resilience and Growth
Despite these early setbacks, Greenacres persevered. The city briefly lost its charter in 1945 but was quickly reincorporated in 1947. Throughout the following decades, Greenacres continued to grow and develop, establishing essential services such as a full-time Police Department in the 1970s and a Fire Department in 1974.
