There were 11,433 housing units at an average density of 719.8 per square mile (278.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 80.24% White, 16.04% African American, 1.19% Asian, 0.18% Native American, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.60% of the population.

The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.3 males. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there were 89.0 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $45,110, and the median income for a family was $52,656. Males had a median income of $40,031 versus $27,871 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,311. About 4.3% of families and 6.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.1% of those under age 18 and 7.2% of those age 65 or over.
